About Windows 98
Windows 98 (called "Memphis" during development and previously called "Windows 97" based on an earlier schedule) is a widely-installed product in Microsoft's evolution of the Windows operating system for personal computers. Windows 98 expresses Microsoft's belief that users want and should have a global view of their potential resources and that Web technology should be an important part of the user interface. Although building Microsoft's own Web browser into the user desktop has been an issue in the U.S. Justice Department's suit, Windows 98 was released as planned with its tightly integrated browser.
In Windows 98, Microsoft's Internet Explorer is an integral part of the operating system. Using the Active Desktop of Windows 98, you can view and access desktop objects that reside on the World Wide Web as well as local files and applications. The Windows 98 desktop is, in fact, a Web page with HTML links and features that exploit Microsoft's ActiveX control.
With Windows 98 (or with Internet Explorer 4.0 in Windows 95), you can set up news and other content to be pushed to you from specified Web sites.
- Windows 98 also provides a 32-bit file allocation table (FAT) that allows you to have a single-partition disk drive larger than 2 Gbytes.
Other features in Windows 98 include:
- Support for Universal Serial Bus (USB), which makes it easy to plug in new devices.
- Support for Digital Versatile Disc (DVD)
- Support for a new industry-standard form of power management called Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)

Re: About Windows 98
Bit Torrent is illegal and not many people know about it in the first place. Please refrain from promoting crime.
Re: About Windows 98
Bit Torrent is not illegal. If you have a right to use the file you download, like a backup, there's no problem. Where people get into trouble is downloading copyrighted material they didn't pay for or otherwise acquire a license or right to use.
Re: About Windows 98
Using BitTorrent is legal; downloading pirated/copyrighted files is not. Please be careful about what you download.
Re: About Windows 98
actually, downloading pirated/copyrighted files is legal. serving them up is what is banned.
Re: About Windows 98
The problem is with your RAM.
Re: About Windows 98
Hello
my problem is the following:
I´d like to format my hard drive and re-install win98se on it, but before i do that, i enter DOS to check if i could run the win98 CD from it, and i couldn´t. It doesn´t recognise the CDROM drive. How can i do to make it work? do i need to load any drivers?
I would thank if anyone could help me.

Re: About Windows 98
You're right, MSDOS has no built-in software for CD drives, although a close look at drive A: after using a boot cd will give you a big clue as to how it's done.
If you have Win98SE on an original CD (or identical backup of same) it will probably self-install if you set the computer BIOS to 'boot from cdrom' and WIN98SE setup just loads itself.
If you have a drive to 'clean', use Windows to copy over the CD's WIN98 directory into, say, C:\WIN98. That's enough to completely reinstall using C:\WIN98\SETUP.EXE, so anything else related to Windows can be deleted using DOS. Best of luck (I do this all the time) Rik.

Re: About Windows 98
Hello.
I have an older Acer Travelmate 4000 laptop that came with XP installed.
I installed a new HD and want to set up a dual boot with '98 and XP, I have to install Win98 first.
Installing '98 went smoothly until the first reboot, a screen came up for a few seconds saying "running win98 for the first time". Then it crashed and rebooted again and a screen came up with a number of boot options. None of those options is getting me anywhere, won't boot in the safe mode either. Tried it a few times, got the same result every time.
Could one of your boot disks here help me out ??
Thx
Re: About Windows 98
Hi,
Just wondering if I can in fact install win 98 with a particular command.I had an idea that these do not provide the means for a clean install of windows 98, but I had some hopeful denial of sorts, thinking that the bootable floppy just might allow me to install windows 98. I made the floppy and got my computer to boot from it. I come to A: prompt and have used many different commands. I've reformatted my drive to FAT32. I've erased WinXP to get rid of NFTS (have reinstall disc). Just wondering where to go next--install win 98 that is--if it's possible.
Thank you,
Dan

Re: About Windows 98
Hi, I've used a win 98 bootable disk from this website to run formatc: /s. So my harddrive is formatted in FAT 32 and ready for windows 98. When I reboot with no disc in the A drive, I just get the command propmt screen C:\ I'm not sure what this mean, I guess there is no operating system on there? How do I get windows 98 to actually load? Is it on the bootable floppy I downloaded, do I type some commpnad at C:\? I've sort of assumed all along that the boot disk doesn't actually allow a fresh install of win98, but was just hoping otherwise. Thank you
