About MS-DOS

Free downloads of MS-DOS emergency startup boot disk. MS-DOS (Microsoft Disk Operating System) was the Microsoft-marketed version of the first widely-installed operating system in personal computers. It was essentially the same operating system that Bill Gates's young company developed for IBM as Personal Computer - Disk Operating System (PC-DOS). Most users of either DOS system simply referred to their system as Disk Operating System. Like PC-DOS, MS-DOS was (and still is) a non-graphical line-oriented command-driven operating system, with a relatively simple interface but not overly "friendly" user interface.

The first Microsoft Windows operating system was really an application that ran on top of the MS-DOS operating system. Today, Windows operating systems continue to support DOS (or a DOS-like user interface) for special purposes by emulating the operating system.

Re: Installation of MS-DOS

Yes, You can install the dos by this files.
Simply run A>sys x: where x is the targeted drive to install DOS.

Then copy all the files of boot disk in your targeted hard drive.

Re: About MS-DOS

Is there any real reason why the older versions of MS-DOS (eg 3.3 through 5.x) are needed by anyone? I think any computer that can run 3.3 should be able to run 6.2 if you've got the right disk drive (size and density). Am I mistaken? My oldest XT, with 360 K 5.25" floppies, ran MS-DOS 6.22 just fine. My Tandy 1400 laptop, with no hard drive only (2) 720 K 3.5" floppies, runs MS-DOS 6.2 quite well.

I understand from another thread that after DOS 6.x, DOS itself is a hidden part of Windows. I suppose this means that there is no real seperate MS-DOS after 6.x. As another post said, DOS in Windows 95 forward is an emulation of DOS, not a seperate OS upon which Windows is an overlay.

However, what about Dr. DOS? I think that third-party OS was up to version 7 but I really don't know (a) how compatible it was with any MS-DOS programs, (b) what the last version was, or (c) how useful it would be even on XT-class computers (8088 chips).

Yes there is! I have test applications and other applications I have written that are on older floppies and run under specific OS versions. I have an old IBM-PC that I still use for test purposes and it has PC-DOS 2.11, an old HP 90MHZ pentium with Compaq MS-DOS 3.31 and a Clone with MS-DOS 6.22.

I have problems with XP reading the old discs and especially when some of these are very old. The older DOSs will force a read where Windows won't.

Networking also isn't a problem but I use both a Novell server and a Windows server the older machines use the Novell server for files and so do my newer windows machines through the windows server. This allows me to move my old applications source code where I can work and convert my best stuff to Windows.

I still love the dos prompt!!

Re: About MS-DOS

I need it to run Windows 1 and 2 in a Virtual Machine (VMWare)

Re: About MS-DOS

Can you help me please? I have an old DOS program that I last used approx 10 years ago, since then, I have replaced/upgraded computers, naturally, and now that I need to use this program, it does not work properly.
I copy it from a floppy to the hard drive, start the exe, the program starts the "start up page" fine, but then immediately shows "Runtime error 200 at 10E9:04D5." and leaves me at the command prompt.
Does this program need to run in an older DOS environment?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Dan. (AKA - Lost.)

Re: About MS-DOS

There is nothing older than WinXPSP2 here and all I wanted to do is create a boot disk to wipe/fdisk/format for rebuilding or scraping. My last "oldie but goodie' boot disk finally gave up the ghost and for the life of me I can't remember how to create a new one. Thanx! and don't ever let this site go the way of the dodo.

Re: About MS-DOS

I need to make a DOS boot disk to uninstall windows vista and install windows XP Home. Does it matter which DOS file I use from here?

Re: About MS-DOS

is this legal? in my opinion, microsoft didn't alowe to distribute ms-dos.

Re: About MS-DOS

As far as I can understand, most MS-DOS users now use something else in its place - perl, biterscripting, ...

I use biterscripting these days. Has all the commands to do what MS DOS and UNIX shell can do. Also has web access. I downloaded it free from http://www.biterscripting.com . It may still be free-downloadble.

Patrick

not about bootdisks, but it is about DOS.

Does anyone know how to get the contents of a file into a variable, or anything like that? I mean, if the text file said:

Hi this is a test file, blah blah blah.

Could you import it to make it a variable like, say, %test%? or anything similar. Thx

P.S. If anyone knows any cool tricks, e-mail me at jedi_master_revan@yahoo.ca I probably have a few you don't know

Re: not about bootdisks, but it is about DOS.

Hi,

assigning the value out of a file to a variable in cmd.exe can be done with "set /P foo=

Re: not about bootdisks, but it is about DOS.

*sigh*

the above should read:
set /P foo=<bar.txt

I' not sure if this also works on command.com.

Cheers,
bexxx
